2020 World Championship Final Heads to Shanghai
The finals will be held in Shanghai Stadium.
The world’s most watched esport event – the League of Legends World Championship – is headed to Shanghai. Already the headquarters of the LPL, China’s premier League of Legends Esports league, we are thrilled to announce that the world-class city will serve as the host of the 10th World Championship Finals in 2020.
The League of Legends World Championship is the culmination of the competitive League of Legends season and gathers the top teams from around the world to compete for the coveted Summoner’s Cup and World Championship title.
Shanghai, otherwise known as Magic City, hosted the 2017 World Championship semifinals where more than 80 million viewers watched Samsung Galaxy beat Team WE and SK Telecom T1 overcome RNG in five epic games. The metropolis is a global hub of finance, innovation, transportation, and trade, and is renowned for its spectacular Lujiazui skyline.
The finals will be held in Shanghai Stadium, the current home of the Chinese Super League reigning championship. The class-A venue, which seats more than 55,000 people, has held multiple different scaled domestic and international sports events including the 2008 Summer Olympics soccer preliminaries.
The World Championship is the biggest esports event of the year and has been hosted at numerous iconic sports and entertainment venues around the world including the AccorHotels Arena in Paris this weekend. The Incheon Munhak Stadium (2018), Beijing National Stadium (2017), New York City’s Madison Square Garden (2016), and Seoul World Cup Stadium (2014) also have served as the flagship venues for the tournament, and we are proud to add the Shanghai Stadium to our growing list of distinguished venues.
The LPL will look to continue their Finalist streak on their home turf when the League of Legends World Championship returns to China next year.
Locations for the Play-In, Group, and Knockout Stages will be revealed in the future. Follow us on social @lolesports to stay up to date on all the latest news and announcements.
